I'm new to online dating/email. What are good questions that are helpful in getting to know others online?

You can ask them about anything. What do you do for fun? What do you do? What kind of music do you listen to? How many brothers and sisters do you have? Do you like sports? What shows do you like to watch? Whats your favorite movie? Do you have any pets? Just use your imagination and be friendly. And remember that is a back and forth thing ( you ask, then he asks) at least until you decide to meet up in person. That's how it worked with me and my boyfriend. We were asking each other questions for about 3 weeks and then we met in person and it was perfect :-)

My observation is, that everything is changing rapidly and people tend more to write short messages. However the right question will prove if someone is serious. Ask as many questions as possible, if the other person is answering your question, you will know if he or she is really interested. But take a look at the above link, they give really good hints.
